Updated

The short version

Start with what you'll sell.

On Vixie, square photo magnets outsell round ones by a wide margin. 2" × 2" and 2.5" × 2.5" sell the most, and 2.25" is the most common round.

Square photo magnets
A square press, about $500 to $2,200 for the press alone, depending on the maker. Pick your size first, because each press makes one size.
Round pin buttons and magnets
A steel 2.25" press, about $295. One press makes pin buttons, magnets, keychains, and mirrors.
Not sure anyone will buy
An $83 budget press or printable magnet sheets. Sell a few, then buy the press you'll keep.

Press types

Four ways to make photo magnets.

Each one makes a different product. The price gap between them is big, so it pays to know which one you need.

Square or rectangle press

What it makes
Square and rectangle photo magnets and pin buttons, like 2" × 2", 2.5" × 2.5", 2" × 3", 2.5" × 3.5"
Price
$500 to $2,200 for the press alone, depending on the maker
Good for
Photo magnet sellers. Squares are what sells most on Vixie.

Round button press

What it makes
Pin buttons, flat-back magnets, keychains, pocket mirrors, bottle openers. The back you press decides the product.
Price
$83 multi-size budget press, about $295 for a US steel press
Good for
Pin buttons and round magnets. 2.25" is the most common round.

Printable magnet sheet

What it makes
Flat, flexible magnets you print and cut yourself
Price
About $60 for 50 letter sheets, about 6¢ a magnet at 20 a sheet, before ink
Good for
Testing whether people will buy before you spend on a press

Puzzle magnets

What it makes
One photo split across 6 or 9 magnets
Price
No extra press. Use your square press.
Good for
Anyone who already owns a square press

Sellers who've tried both say pressed magnets look better and sell for more than cut magnet sheet. Sheets are still a cheap way to test your market.

The presses

Presses vendors actually buy.

List prices from each maker's own site, October 2026. Steel presses make one size each, so a second size means a second press.

Add your paper and ink on top. The China rows are metric parts for Chinese presses, and they don't fit US presses. Packs of 100 cost two to three times as much per magnet, so buy 1,000 once you know your size. Plug your own numbers into the magnet profit calculator to see what you make on each one.

Before you buy

The size traps.

Most press regrets come down to parts that don't fit. Check these before you order.

  • 2.25" is not 58 mm

A US 2.25" press is 57.15 mm. Imported 58 mm parts usually don't work in it, and US parts usually don't work in a 58 mm press.

  • Badge-A-Minit is its own size

Badge-A-Minit's 2.25" parts only fit Badge-A-Minit presses. Other suppliers sell them as a separate line, and some label them 2 3/8".

  • Square parts don't swap between brands

Each maker builds its square shells, backs, and punches for its own press. Makers warn that their parts may not fit other machines.

  • Print size changes with the press

The photo you print for a 2" × 2" magnet is 2.717" across on one press and 3.64" on another. Your print template has to match your press, or the photo lands off-center.

Vixie lays out the print for your press.

In Edit Measurements, pick Titan, MPRO, TECRE, Chinese, or ENTERS specs and the Photo Size, Edge Width, and offsets fill in for that press. If your press isn't listed, type in your own numbers. The photo magnet sizes guide lists every size and which presets cover it.

Buying advice

What sellers wish they'd known.

  • Buy steel if you'll sell

Vendors who press in volume say plastic budget presses crack, drift out of line, and start wrinkling the film. A steel press costs more once and keeps going for years.

  • Commit to one size first

Steel presses don't swap dies. Start with the size your customers want most, usually 2.25" for rounds, and add a second press when that one is busy.

  • Punch or cutter

A punch is fastest for one size. An adjustable cutter covers several sizes and handles photo paper and fabric. If you print on photo paper, get the photo version of the press and punch.

  • Plan for 100 to 200 an hour

Owners report 100 to 200 pieces an hour once they get a rhythm. At a busy event, the press is rarely the slow part. Taking orders and laying out prints is.

Questions

Magnet press FAQ

What is the best button maker machine for a beginner?+
If you plan to sell, a steel 2.25" press is the safe start. It costs about $295 for the press, and 2.25" is the most common size for pin buttons and round magnets. If you only want to try it out, an $83 multi-size budget press works. Sellers in vendor forums say budget presses wear out fast once you press in volume.
How much does a magnet press cost?+
A round 2.25" press runs about $295 for a US steel press, or $477 as a kit with a cutter and 250 sets. Square and rectangle photo magnet presses cost more: about $500 to $720 from Chinese sellers, or $1,270 to $2,200 from US sellers, and up to about $2,570 as a kit. We checked the US prices on the makers' own sites in October 2026.
Can a button maker make magnets?+
Yes. A round button press makes magnets when you swap the pin back for a flat magnet back. The same press also makes keychains, pocket mirrors, and bottle openers with the matching backs.
Do 58 mm parts fit a 2.25" press?+
Usually not. A US 2.25" press is 57.15 mm. American Button Machines says imported 58 mm parts don't work well in its presses, and its parts don't work in 58 mm presses. Buy parts made for your press.
Which photo magnet size sells best?+
On Vixie, square magnets outsell round ones by a wide margin. 2" × 2" and 2.5" × 2.5" sell the most, followed by 2.5" × 3.5". Among rounds, 2.25" is the most common size by far, both in vendors' products and in what customers order.
Can I make puzzle magnets with a magnet press?+
Yes. Puzzle magnets are square magnets cut from one photo, so your square press makes them. You split the photo into a grid, print each piece, and press them one by one.
Why does my button press jam?+
The usual causes are two shells or two films loaded by mistake, or paper that's too thick for the press. A drop of oil on the moving parts helps too. On square presses, using the wrong back for your template also jams the press.
